Katakwi Showcases Positive Outcomes of LEGS Project as Plans for Expansion Advance

Katakwi Showcases Positive Outcomes of LEGS Project as Plans for Expansion Advance

The Government of Uganda, in partnership with the Islamic Development Bank (IsDB) and the Lives and Livelihoods Fund (LLF), conducted a productive visit to Katakwi District on Saturday. This field appraisal mission aimed to evaluate the successes of the first phase of the Local Economic Growth Support (LEGS) Project and to inform the development of its second phase.

During the visit, the mission team, along with the Katakwi district technical team led by Mr. Felix Alex Majeme, the Chief Administrative Officer, and local political leaders, toured several key project sites. Highlights included the Orugo Corner Water Scheme and the Kanapa Solar-Powered Mini Grid System in Magoro Sub-county. These innovative initiatives have significantly enhanced access to clean water and electricity, thereby uplifting the quality of life for local communities.

Ms. Achom Stella, the person in charge of Aakum Health Centre, emphasised the transformative impact of the water project on healthcare delivery. She remarked, “Patients, especially pregnant mothers, can now easily clean themselves, which has greatly improved health and hygiene at the facility.”

The team also explored the Kanapa shared solar mini-grid system, which has successfully connected numerous households to reliable electricity. This access has fostered the growth of small businesses, including shops, salons, soft drink depots, and a small-scale milling machine. Additionally, the initiative has supplied a solar-powered motorcycle to the community, enhancing mobility and generating income for the Kanapa Solar Power Association, which manages the scheme.

The association has demonstrated impressive community ownership, having saved over UGX 2 million to support the future maintenance of the plant, ensuring ongoing sustainability.

The insights gained from this visit will be invaluable as we work toward the planned expansion of the LEGS project from 17 to 55 districts across Uganda, further fostering economic growth and community development.
