On 12th June 2023, government of Uganda through Uganda National Roads Authority (UNRA) signed a contract agreement with Abubaker Technical Services and General Supplies Limited, a local company, for the Rehabilitation of the Matugga-Semuto-Kapeeka Road (41Km).

While witnessing the signing of the agreement at UNRA headquarters, Allen Kagina the executive director at UNRA, revealed that construction works are scheduled to commence in August 2023 at total cost is UGX 217 billion within a construction period of 24 months.

The 41-kilometre Matugga-Semuto-Kapeeka Road is a vital artery in Uganda’s Central region, running through Wakiso, Luwero, and Nakaseke Districts.

According to Kagina, the road has served a rapidly growing economic area due to increased urbanisation, agricultural and industrialisation activities which increased its traffic tremendously bringing about its urgent rehabilitation.

The project will include the upgrading of 5km of town roads, including the Semuto-Kijaguzo Sec. School/St. Mary’s Parish Kijaguzo section (2km) which will improve connectivity within the local communities, enhancing accessibility to business, educational and religious institutions.

Gen. Edward Katumba Wamala the Minister of Works and Transport noted that the rehabilitation of the Matugga – Semuto – Kapeeka road takes on a greater serve as the only paved connection to the Kapeeka Industrial Park.

“As many of you are aware, Kapeeka Industrial Park is experiencing remarkable growth and has become one of the leading industrial parks in East Africa. Therefore, we must ensure that the road infrastructure supporting this park is in optimal condition. Developing industrial parks is one of the vehicles for socio-economic transformation, with the projected creation of 2.5 million jobs in the next five years.” Katumba said

As one of the fastest-growing industrial parks in East Africa, this project aligns with objectives to boost trade and industrial development in the region.

Sarah Namujju, the Nakaseke Woman Member of Parliament, welcomed the project, describing it as a big relief to motorists since the road had been in an appalling state for so long.

She thanked President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni for delivering on his pledge to rehabilitate this road.

UNRA is committed to maintaining, managing and developing the National Road network while Efficiently Developing and Maintaining a Safe and Sustainable National Road Network for the Economic Development of Uganda.
